Great Beginnings
The Gantt house was built around 1830 by Dr.
Thomas Simmons. It is a vernacular federal
design, two story clap board house. Lexington
Post Mistress Mary Harth lived here and lead the
ladies' fund raising efforts to erect the Confederate
Monument in 1886. Mrs. Harth was the daughter of
Dr. Thomas Simmons. She was the great
granddaughter of Isaac Hayne. Mrs. Queenie Gantt
was the last person to live in the home. She was
the daughter of Dr. James Harmon.
The house is one block from the Lexington County Court House and is listed in the National
Historic Register as the Simmons-Harth-Gantt House. It is currently owned by Larry Gantt,
son of Queenie Gantt.
The Gantt House has been recently renovated in period style and is available for social and
business events.
